Stand your ground Dzhokar Tsarnaev

23 Jul

by Evan Zenobia

Among the many controversies that erupted over the last few weeks, two really stand out to me because, together, they really say a lot about the state of American justice.

The first is about the acquittal of child-killer George Zimmerman. A Florida jury stacked with gated-community white women found that Zimmerman, who went after the 17 year-old Trayvon Martin with a loaded gun against police instructions was cleared of all charges. And even though a 911 call recording shows that Martin screamed in distress for 30 seconds before Zimmerman pulled the trigger, the media is still busy painting him as a tragic hero, cheering for his acquittal, slandering Martin, and insisting that he was merely a noble and principled neighbourhood watcher who, at worst made a mistake and at best was a victim in his virtuous cause.

The second controversy surrounds the appearance of suspected Boston bomber Dzhokar Tsarnaev’s sexy headshot on the cover of Rolling Stone. All sorts of public personalities lashed out in indignant outrage, calling the cover insensitive and offensive and whining that the magazine inappropriately glorified.

Despite the outcry, the Rolling Stone story, as Scott’s Written Words illustrates concisely, amounts to little more than outright character assassination. Rolling Stone isn’t alone in this attitude. Many icons on the American left such as Bill Maher and Lawrence O’Donnell have joined in assuming Tsarnaev’s guilt.

And here’s what’s wrong with this picture.

We KNOW that Zimmerman killed Martin. We know he decided to stalk Martin, and we know he shot him. Of course, they didn’t shut down an entire city to hunt Zimmerman down and put him in a coma. But the right-wing media won’t stop lionizing him, going so far as to float out a story about some post-trial heroics on his part.

But in Tsarnaev’s case, the evidence is much more threadbare. He is an accused terrorist. He has pleaded not guilty. Now, there’s this whole principle called innocent until proven guilty, and it’s only served as a cornerstone of Western civilization. Yet the media doesn’t care. They’ve decided he’s guilty. Judge, jury and executioner, and they’re not even pretending he has the right, nevermind the chance, to make his case.

Good job America. Good fucking job. Killing Black kids is fine, and immigrants get character assassination in lieu of basic legal rights. Way to go.

But hey, maybe Tsarnaev could just use the stand your ground defense.

No justice for Trayvon? Then no peace for racists!

Trayvon Martin’s killer, wannabe cop vigilante George Zimmerman, has been found not guilty. Evidently, killing Black kids isn’t a crime.

Not in America. Oh, but firing warning shots at an violently abusive husband can get you 20 years.

In case you’re not aware, there is a huge racist dimension to this.

Because Trayvon Martin was Black, Zimmerman decided to stalk him through his own neighbourhood. Because Martin was Black, his murderer went after him against police instructions to ignore him. And, because he was Black, it was more than a month before Zimmerman was arrested.

Oh, and Fox News and Sun News and other right-wing media figures were oh-so-quick to defend Zimmerman, to call Martin out for his seditious and threatening hoodie, and to denounce with theatrical indignation the word “cracker” as a vicious slur.

Because, in America, being Black means you don’t have human rights. Being Black means you and your family never have a shot at justice. For every Trayvon Martin we hear about, there’s a hundred we don’t hear about. Being Black means living in perpetual fear that the police and vigilantes are always prepared to accost you, stalk you, humiliate you, beat you and even kill you, for no other reason than that you are Black.

And every time, these racist pigs get away with it.

But, of course, the moment Black people rise up to express their indignation at the egregious human rights violations against them, the media is always prepped to point and scream about how violent Black people are.

It’s high time these pigs stop getting away with it. Let our hopes and wishes be with the Martin family. Let us hope for no more killings.

But should there be riots, I really hope it shocks white America into shaping the fuck up.

Hugo Chavez, champion of the people

10 Mar

By Evan Zenobia and Qalina Tileli

OTTAWA—The people of Venezuela have lost their president. Hugo Chavez, 58, passed away on the 5th  of March, after a long battle with cancer.

Chavez was a tireless defender of the poor, whose presidency was marked by comprehensive campaigns aimed at eradicating poverty and illiteracy and expanding democracy in Venezuela and throughout Latin America.

So it’s no surprise that it was only moments after his body grew cold that Sun News and other notorious big-business liars media outlets carted out their most repugnant talking-heads to slander Chavez.

In Canada, Sun News unsurprisingly takes first prize in the contest for most outrageously libellous and hateful accusations against the late president. On the 6th  of March alone, Byline, the Arena, the Source and Charles Adler each devoted a segment to smearing Chavez, calling him a dictator and cheering for his death like all good pro-life conservatives do.

Here are just a few of the gems these odious propagandists churned out about the democratically-elected president who cut poverty in half and extreme poverty by 70 percent.

Chavez who crushed opposition, shut down newspapers, busted labour unions.” Ezra Levant, liar.

This is a glorious day that a horrible man like Chavez is now assuming room temperature.” Steven Crowder, “comedian,” “Christian,” racist and amateur union buster.

I’m sorry he didn’t take his good buddy Castro with him to hell.” Charles Adler, “Christian”

At this key juncture, I hope the people of Venezuela can now build for themselves a better, brighter future based on the principles of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.” Stephen Harper, liar, mediaphobic politician.

It really says a lot about the priorities and real values of Canadian conservatives when they can’t restrain themselves from spewing the most dishonest and hateful bile about a man who never set foot in Canada. So, we’re going to dispel, one by the one, the slanderous myths conservatives have brewed up about Chavez, and expose the real roots of conservative hatred.

Hugo Chavez was a dictator

For a supposed dictator, Chavez was very democratic. He was elected president in four separate elections. To address the slander of vote-rigging, here’s what former US president Jimmy Carter said about Venezuela’s elections “[a]s a matter of fact, of the 92 elections that we’ve monitored, I would say that the election process in Venezuela is the best in the world.” And, unlike Stephen Harper’s Conservative Party, Chavez won each election with a majority of cast votes with very high voter turnout. All without robocalls or billionaires bankrolling him.

What’s more, Venezuela, under Chavez’s leadership, expanded democracy. Democracy in Venezuela is more than voting for professional politicians to squabble for four years. Chavez initiated a program of community councils and co-operatives, where people come together to make decisions affecting their community collectively at a truly grassroots level. Meanwhile, the Chavez government has actively encouraged high voter participation. Venezuelan democracy, then, is truly “rule by the people.”

Hugo Chavez repressed dissent

No, he didn’t. Unlike your standard dictator, who jails journalists, intellectuals, teachers and artists, Chavez did no such thing. Only five to eight percent of the country’s audience tuned into Venezuelan state TV (Still better than Sun News!). That means 92 to 95 percent of the country’s TV, and the bulk of its print and radio media as well, was fully independent from the government. But of course, conservatives consider letting the KKK march a litmus test for freedom.

Unlike the Harper government, there was no systematic attempt to silence scientists, and government officials actually spoke to the media!

Hugo Chavez has impoverished Venezuela in socialism!

Actually, the Chavez administration dramatically reduced misery. Chavez reduced poverty by half, and extreme poverty by 70 percent. Meanwhile, Chavez has also expanded access to health care end education for the country’s poor, mobilizing the country’s natural resources—once the private domain of multinational corporations and the country’s sell-out billionaire elite—to fund eradication of poverty. While poverty continues to exist, the socialism of the twentieth century reversed the spiralling economic devastation of pre-Chavez administration, and can only be considered a profound success in the fight against inequality and for social justice.

Hugo Chavez was an enemy of the United States

True, because the United States made themselves an enemy of him. In 2002, the US backed a coup d’état against Chavez, which was reversed by mass protests and mobilization in his defence. Meanwhile, US public figures and talking heads threw vitriolic attacks against the Venezuelan president, including Evangelical “Christian” Pat Robertson’s call to have him killed.

The Chavez administration nationalized foreign-owned petro projects in Venezuela and firmly took control of the nation’s oil and other resources. Using the oil wealth to fund democratic and anti-poverty projects, Chavez enraged the traditional elites and their US-based puppet masters. Chavez’s confrontation with the United States grew from governance in the interest of his country’s poor. What’s more, the Venezuelan government also provided free fuel to tens of thousands of low-income American families along with needy people all over the world.  Imagine that, governing for the people and not greasing the palms of the wealthy!

Chavez called Bush the Devil

Also true, and not necessarily ridiculous. Bush was a man who cheated his way into the presidency, lied to his country and the world so that he could bomb Iraqis and steal their oil. I don’t think that seems very illustrative of Christian virtue.

Conservatives don’t hate Chavez because of any passion for democracy. Conservatives hate democracy. The Sun News Network star pundit Michael Coren defended the jailing of Russian dissidents by the vicious Putin regime. Bush gained the presidency after losing the popular vote, and Stephen Harper prorogued parliament to prevent the elected representatives of the majority of voters from forming a government.

Conservatives hate Chavez because he challenged their vision and their values. Rather than selling out and subordinating his country to neo-colonialism and his people to exploitation, his government uplifted and empowered the masses of the poor. Rather than acting as a puppet for the ultra-rich, he invested in programs to combat poverty.

And it worked!

Chavez’s presidency is proof that a government can invest in common people rather than in billionaires, that fighting poverty is not futile and that the people, truly empowered, will not tolerate assaults against their rights, equality or freedom.

Michael Coren a Christian !?

25 Jan

By Evan Zenobia

OTTAWA—In the 20 December 2013 Arena feature “Justin a Catholic?”, Michael Coren and Sun News regular Jack Fonseca spent several minutes in righteous indignation over Justin Trudeau. Not over his policies or his positions, but because the Liberal leadership candidate has the nerve to call himself Catholic.

Imagining themselves to be senior clergymen, the two effectively excommunicated Trudeau from the Roman Catholic Church. Even though Trudeau was born to two Catholic parents, was married in a Catholic Church and never publicly converted to any other faith, Coren tells the audience that Trudeau is not a Catholic; worse he is a heretic.

Coren, of course, is lying.

Which really begs the question: is Michael Coren a Christian?

It’s not that anyone should really care. But if Coren wants to lower the bar past redneck speculation that Barack Obama is secret Muslim to the point where it is apparently legitimate to label political opponents heretics, I figure Eclipse News ought to take a stab at sixteenth-century-style religious paranoia.

See, Coren and Fonseca declare that Trudeau’s positions on social issues make him unfit to speak to audiences of Catholic School students. In particular, Trudeau’s advocacy for a woman’s right to choose is tantamount to violation of “thou shall not kill.”

But then, Coren works on Sun News, where he is constantly breaking that whole Biblical rule against LYING. A hobby he shares with most Sun News regulars, including Fonseca.

Then, of course, there’s the station’s hypocrisy, by which they bill themselves as champions of free speech, but then use Trudeau’s supposed religious impiety as an excuse to repress his.

So really, it would appear that Michael Coren is not, by his own definition, a Christian.

Ezra Levant is a holocaust denier

24 Nov

In light of the recent humanitarian crisis in the Gaza strip, Eclipse News is devoting a whole week to covering Palestinian topics. Most of Canada’s mainstream media are complicit in Israeli war crimes and have utterly failed in their responsibility to report on the truth.

The following post is the third in this week’s special Palestine coverage.

By Evan Zenobia

OTTAWA – Sun News has unleashed a revolting media blitzkrieg in favour of Israel’s war crimes, aggression and murder of Gaza civilians.

One of the most disgusting instances in this media campaign was when star pundit Ezra Levant tried to advance his defence of Israel by denying that several holocausts had ever happened.

In his 21 November feature, “Standing Up for Israel,” Levant attempts to defend Israel’s aggression by painting a false equivalence between Palestinian resistance and the 1940s Nazi genocide of Europe’s Jews, saying “There’s no other country that faces existential threat the way Israel does, there’s no other people in the world, who, within living memory were the target of genocide.”

Such a statement is a grotesque denial of historical fact and an insult to the suffering of the many other victims of genocide. Between 1914 and1915, the Ottoman Empire carried out the systematic murder of almost two-million Armenians and almost one-million greeks. Levant, apparently, believes that Armenians and Greeks were never the target of genocide.

During the 1940s, Jews were not alone in the concentration camps, as the Nazis attempted the extermination of homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, persons with disabilities and Roma (or “Gypsies”). According to Levant, the holocausts of these peoples also never happened. Although, given Levant’s anti-Roma racism, maybe he feels the annihilation of half of Europe’s Roma population had it coming.

Then there’s the Ukrainian holodomor, the Rwandan genocide, the Bosnian genocide, the East Timorese genocide and the Sri Lankan Tamil genocide, all of which have been decades more recent than Nazi extermination of Jews. But, Levant denies that these holocausts ever happened.

Congratulations Sun News! Canada’s first major media outlet to give a holocaust denier his very own hour-long Prime Time program!

In any case, Israel is probably the best fortified state in history, year after year getting more foreign aid from the US than all of Africa. Two if Israel’s neighbours, Jordan and Egypt, have been at peace with the state for decades. Its other two neighbours, Lebanon and Syria, are each partially occupied by the Israeli Defence Forces. Israel faces no existential threat.

The Palestinian people, however, do. Consider Israel’s Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai promising “[t]he more qassam fire intensifies and the rockets reach a longer range, they (the Palestinians) will bring upon themselves a bigger shoah because we will use all our might to defend ourselves.” Or, the Interior Minister Eli Yishai’s declaration that “the goal of the operation is to send Gaza back to the Middle Ages.”

These remarks certainly demonstrate genocidal intent. And Israel’s forced displacement of hundreds of thousands, home demolitions, and most recent massacres certainly point to that as well.

But Levant is a holocaust denier. No matter how many Palestinians die, no matter how close they come to utter extermination, Levant will deny it.

Eclipse News recognizes the Palestine’s peril, and stands in solidarity with the friends and families of the victims of Israel’s genocidal machinations. Long live Palestine!

Rob Anders puts his foot in his mouth; Sun News immitates

5 Oct

By Qalina Tileli

GATINEAU – Sun News darling Rob Anders is in the spotlight again, and Sun News is desperate to cast him as a good guy.

Rob Anders is a Calgary Conservative MP, and one of the only MPs to appear on Sun News programs. He is also a jerk of monumental proportions.

Anders suggested that NDP leader Tom Mulcair intentionally hastened the death of former NDP leader Jack Layton, who died from cancer in 2011. Maybe Sun News has some inside information, but Eclipse News has found no evidence of Mulcair possessing cancer-causing powers.

But for Sun News, Anders is a great guy, and was entirely right to accuse Mulcair of intentionally causing Layton to die. Perhaps he lacks tact, but that’s no reason to dismiss Rob Anders, says Michael Coren and his guest on the feature “Free speech meets parliamentary offensiveness.”

And, wrapping themselves in the free speech flag, Sun News attacks the NDP’s response to Anders comments. According to Sun News, the NDP’s demands for apologies and the calls for Anders’s resignation amount to repressing free speech.

No, Sun News, NO. That is not what is at play here. The NDP is not against free speech They just happen to believe that the elected representatives sitting in the House of Commons should be held to standard of honesty higher than that of Sun New yellow journalism.

Can you imagine the theatrical indignation of Ezra Levant, Michael Coren and the rest if Peter Kormos, Randall Garrison or Maria Mourani suggested Harper had anything to do with Layton’s death? Of course, they never have the opportunity to get indignant over those types of things because Canada’s left isn’t prone to nauseatingly offensive verbal diarrhoea.

And it’s painfully ironic that in the same feature that claims the NDP is against free speech, Coren has the nerve to praise Rona Ambrose, who blocked Environment Canada scientist Mark Tushingham from presenting his novel at a Book Talk in Ottawa.

Let’s be clear. The NDP is not against free speech. It wasn’t the NDP who blocked George Galloway from a scheduled visit to Canada. It wasn’t the NDP who blocked Ashanti Alston from entering Canada. And it wasn’t the NDP who banned Greenpeace t-shirts from parliament!

This is Sun News reasoning. Lying about leftists, Harper’s repression of free speech, that’s all fair game. But the NDP calling out Anders on his bullshit is an affront to free speech?

Eclipse New defends free speech. But Eclipse News is also unafraid to publish that when people express hateful of idiotic sentiments, those comments are up for scrutiny.

Rob Anders bullcrap and lies: a small list

In 2001, Anders was the only MP to pull the ass-hat stunt of voting against granting honorary Canadian citizenship to South African anti-apartheid activist Nelson Mandela. Anders defended his vote on the grounds that Mandela, who served 27 years in prison for challenging apartheid before his release and election as South Africa’s first Black president, was a former “Communist and terrorist.”

While Mandela lead the left-wing African National Congress party and cooperated with communists in the struggle against the racist South African state, he himself was not a member of the South African Communist Party, and his country certainly isn’t communist. And Mandela was only a “terrorist” in the same way that WWII anti-Nazi partisans and resistance were terrorists.

Whether this Sun News favourite is a fan of apartheid has never been clear. He also justified his vote as a protest against the Liberals blocking his party’s motion to honour the wedding anniversary of the Queen of England, which, in Anders’ mind, is somehow Canada’s business.

When Anders isn’t voting like a petty cry-baby or napping in Parliament, he’s on Sun News, rolling around with the station’s pundits in dishonesty, slander and distortion. He was featured to denounce government funding of a visitor centre honouring Canadian doctor Norman Bethune. Bethune served the poor of Montreal free of charge during the Great Depression and was a tireless advocate of socialized health care. He also ran an art school for children from the slums that he funded out of his own pocket.

Bad enough he supported universal health care and helped poor people! But, for Sun News and Anders, Bethune’s real crime is his support for Mao Zedong..

Bethune did serve in Mao’s forces as a battlefield doctor, treating the wounded and performing battlefield services. Of course, this was from 1938 to 1939, when Mao was fighting Hitler’s Japanese allies. Bethune died in 1939, long before Mao took power, and served both in China and Spain out of anti-Nazi convictions.

Anders and Sun News really seem to take issue with the political opponents of racist regimes.

And, without a doubt to the delight of Sun News pundits, Anders is circulating a petition to block the passage of Bill C-279, which would amend the Criminal Code and the Canadian Human Rights Act to include protections for gender identity and gender expression. He calls the Bill a “Bathroom Bill” and the wording of his petition is full of distortion and lies.

Yes Rob, speak freely. One day everything you said will catch up to you.

Sun News can’t spell

26 Sep

By Qalina Tileli

GATINEAU – Seriously, it can’t. As this goes to press, the title to the September 25th The Source feature on Che Guevara reads Che Guevera’s not chic.
“Guevara” is a common Spanish surname and the name of a village in Spain’s Basque Country. It is not spelled “Guevera.” Does Sun News really have nobody to check on these things? Especially when the blurb for the story actually spells the name correctly.
Dr. Ernesto “Che” Guevara was a physician who joined the Cuban revolutionary movement in the 1950s and was instrumental in the overthrow of US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. Guevara worked in volunteer labour and pushed for racial integration in Cuba’s school. He was assassinated on orders from the CIA in 1967. He is revered as a martyr, freedom fighter and symbol of Latin American dignity throughout the developing world.

Sun News’s Ezra Levant fabricated an took the opportunity to slander Guevara, with his guest accusing the revolutionary of executing over 1000 people in just one year. The most authoritative, well-researched and comprehensive biography of Guevara, Jon Lee Anderson’s “Che Guevara, a Revolutionary Life,” states that 55 people (mostly war criminals) were executed on his watch. The guest went on to state that the Batista dictatorship claimed only 700 lives over 9 years; in fact some estimates put Batista’s victim count at 20 000.

But truth has never gotten in the way of Sun News. That’s why Levant suggested a Che t-shirt should arouse the same indignation as a shirt bearing the likeness of Joseph Stalin or Adolf Hitler. Millions died under Stalin’s heal. 17 million died in the Holocaust alone; millions more died under Hitler’s rule before the Holocaust and as victims of his war.

Last I checked, 55 was not equal to 17 million.

But then, Sun News does suck at math.
