Gatineau-Ottawa Idle No More rally tomorrow at Victoria Island

21 Dec

GATINEAU – The snow is due to fall heavy tomorrow, but the weather cannot stop the determination of citizens to fight for the rights and dignity of the First Nations and to resist the tyranny and disrespect of the Harper Government.

On Friday, 21 December 2012, when the world is about to end, citizens will gather on Victoria Island to protest the Harper Government’s vicious assault on the rights and sovereignty of Aboriginal peoples and its massive sellout of waterways and natural resources to big business.

Harper’s Bill C-45 facilitates non-consultative seizures of sovereign Aboriginal Treaty land by empowering Ministers to call meetings on land sales in which the decision falls to the majority of those present at the meeting. This is an utter slap in the face to the rights of Aboriginal communities to democratically determine the state of their land.

His recent laws have also unraveled longstanding protections on Canadian rivers and waterways. These both violate Treaty protections of Aboriginal fishing rights and the health prospects of all citizens of this country.

These are but a FEW of the despicable acts recently passed by the authoritarian ultra-conservative government sitting in Ottawa.

The rally begins at Victoria Island at noon.INM_DarkPurple_small
