Pundit with no background in science calls consensus of 97% of climate scientists a myth

OTTAWA – It’s no secret that Sun News has a profound contempt for the natural environment and environmental movements. Racist Star pundit Ezra Levant made that clear when he chain-sawed a tree on Earth Day.

Of course, it is one thing to criticise environmentalism and be apathetic towards the environment. It is quite another to insist that man-made climate change is a non-existent myth.

But that’s what Ezra Levant does.

Levant, a pundit and lawyer with no background in science, argues that the consensus reached by 97 percent of climate researchers is wrong. That’s right. According to Levant, the overwhelming majority of climate scientists don’t know what they’re talking about when addressing their field of expertise.

No scientific body of national and international standing dissents from the position that human activities, in particular greenhouse gas emissions, are responsible for the planet’s consistently rising average surface temperature since the late 19th century.

Thousands of scientists aren’t enough to convince Levant, though. For him, anyone and everyone who promotes the idea that man-made climate change is harmful are merely anti-human environmental zealots driven by ideology. To quote: “[i]t’s a half-religion, half-philosophy, half-politics.”

Of course, anyone with an iota of intelligence understands that, to put it mildly, this is bullshit. Religion is fundamentally non-scientific, being rooted in faith rather than in empirical study and observation.

To the contrary, fervent and committed disbelief in and denial of the dangers of climate change in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence is much more suggestive of a religious zeal.

Eclipse News usually asks the question whether Sun News pundits are either ignorant or lying. But with Levant we can speculate on the third option of religious fanatic.

At least we, along with Mr. Levant, live in a society that affords us all the freedom to argue with experts in their own fields. I’m not trying to defend Mr. Levant’s views, but sometimes, it takes someone from the outside to puncture myths perpetuated by those on the inside of a field, for the benefit of us all. Examples: Louis Pasteur, Christopher Columbus, Erin Brokovich.

Yes, it’s pretty clear that human activity is causing global warming, but that’s not the only dire effect. There’s the 90% reduction in fish stocks, the enormous dead zones in the oceans (almost the entire Gulf of Mexico), loss of 50% of the world’s forests and the second-greatest mass extinction in Earth’s history.

The thing to remember is that those arguing the case against the existence of something obvious must be getting something out of it. In the case of global warming, every pundit or person arguing against it is somehow tied to the oil industry — or is being paid by it.

What’s really astounding is their short-sightedness. Doesn’t Mr. Levant have children? Doesn’t he worry about how they and their children will live?
